Conwy, previously known in English as Conway, is a walled market town, community and the administrative centre of Conwy County Borough in North Wales. The walled town and castle stand on the west bank of the River Conwy, facing Deganwy on the east bank.

Caernarvon

Caernarfon is a historic royal town and port in Gwynedd, North Wales, famous for its massive 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage castle built by Edward I. Located on the Menai Strait, it serves as a gateway to Snowdonia and features a vibrant waterfront, narrow streets, and the Welsh Highland Railway.

Anglesey

There are countless places worth visiting along the 140 mile/ 225 km Anglesey Coastal Path. It goes right round the island. The Friends of the Isle of Anglesey Coast Path website has handy maps and detailed descriptions of the path's 12 sections.

As well as skirting the spectacular coastline, the path passes through farmland, coastal heath, dunes and small pockets of woodland. Highlights include South Stack lighthouse, the sea arches at Bwa Gwyn and the wild flowers and birdlife at Aberffraw dunes.

Rhyl

Rhyl is a seaside town and community in Denbighshire in Wales. The town lies on the north coast of Wales, at the mouth of the River Clwyd. To the west is Kinmel Bay and Towyn, to the east Prestatyn, and to the south-east Rhuddlan and St Asaph

Snowdon Mountain Railway

Most railways use simple adhesion of rail wheels on the rails to move a train along a track. In the case of mountain railways, the gradient of the track means that simple adhesion does not work.

The solution is to mount a toothed rack between the running rails and provide a cog (pinion) on the locomotive. In this way, the locomotive can crawl up steep gradients.

There are seven different types of railway rack and pinion systems but by far the most popular worldwide is the Abt system, as used here at Snowdon Mountain Railway. The system was invented by Dr. Roman Abt, a Swiss railway engineer, in 1885. The system is cheaper to manufacture and install than other systems as it uses less steel.

Portmerion

Portmeirion Village has hotels, cottages, shops, restaurants and cafes, woodland gardens and estuary views.

Portmeirion was created by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925 to 1976 to show how a naturally beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it. Portmeirion village and gardens is one of Wales' premier visitor attractions, welcoming over 200,000 visitors every year.

Situated on a private peninsula overlooking stunning coastal scenery, the Italian Riviera meets rural Wales with a riot of colour and architectural styles at Portmeirion Village. Built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion is now one of Wales’ most popular tourist destinations.

Portmeirion Village is well known as the location for the 1960s cult TV series The Prisoner. It comprises a cluster of colour-washed buildings around a central piazza, scenic surroundings and extensive woodlands, two hotels, historic cottages, gift shops, spa & award winning restaurants.

The concept of a tightly grouped coastal village had been envisaged by Clough Williams-Ellis years before he found the site, close to his own home in North Wales, on which he managed to realise his dream. Portmeirion has become known as one of the most successful British architectural projects of the twentieth century.

Beaumaris Castle

Fortress of near-perfect symmetry is an unfinished masterpiece

Beaumaris on the island of Anglesey is famous as the greatest castle never built. It was the last of the royal strongholds created by Edward I in Wales – and perhaps his masterpiece.

Here Edward and his architect James of St George took full advantage of a blank canvas: the ‘beau mareys’ or ‘beautiful marsh’ beside the Menai Strait. By now they’d already constructed the great castles of Conwy, Caernarfon and Harlech. This was to be their crowning glory, the castle to end all castles.

The result was a fortress of immense size and near-perfect symmetry. No fewer than four concentric rings of formidable defences included a water-filled moat with its very own dock. The outer walls alone bristled with 300 arrow loops.

But lack of money and trouble brewing in Scotland meant building work had petered out by the 1320s. The south gatehouse and the six great towers in the inner ward never reached their intended height. The Llanfaes gate was barely started before being abandoned.

Swallow Falls - Lots of Walking.

Swallow Falls is the highest continuous waterfall in Wales and features a set of beautiful waterfalls on the River Llugwy located approximately two miles to the west of the village of Betws y Coed on route to Capel Curig and just off the A5.  Swallow Falls is a breathtaking natural wonder that draws thousands of visitors each year. Visitors can get access to view the falls via a viewing platform for which a small charge applies.

North Wales Mountain Railway & Festinog
