Shanklin lies to the south of Sandown and is famed for its beautiful beaches and sub-tropical gardens alongside years of seaside tradition. Thanks to old thatched cottages, tea rooms and artisan souvenir shops, its one of the most popular towns on the Island with holidaymakers looking for some old-world charm. There are plenty of walkways and cycle paths to explore, as well as carnivals and the Shanklin Regatta that add excitement to any summer getaway.

The National Trusts Needles Old Battery is spectacularly sited above the Needles Rocks and has the best views you can get from land of the iconic geological formation.
Recently returned from conservation work, visitors can see the original dress uniform jacket worn by Master Gunner Robert Lakeman who worked at the Battery, or head through the underground tunnel, that takes you deep through the cliffs, for a unique bird's eye view of The Needles.
The tea-room is in an old look-out tower and serves hot and cold drinks, light lunches, sandwiches, cakes and traybakes with dramatic views of the Needles Rocks and Dorset in the distance.
From the Old Battery there are miles of wonderful cliff top walks stretching from the Needles Headland to Freshwater Bay across the Headland and Tennyson Down.
Wildheart Animal Sanctuary (Entrance included)
From pocket sized primates to powerful predators, the residents of Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, will charm and amaze you!
Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is based on Sandown Beach, Winner of BBC Countryfile Magazines 2019 Beach of the Year Award, which is on the east coast of the Island. The sanctuary is well known as a centre for rescued big cats, all have come to their forever homes at different stages of their lives and from a variety of backgrounds. Originally family-owned it recently became a registered charity, Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, which aims to promote the survival of endangered species through first class educational and recreational experiences, exemplary animal management, conservation and research.
New primate rescue facilitiy is now open and houses multiple species of primates that the sanctuary aims to rehome over the coming years. The facility is constructed of two gigantic bamboo domes, the first of their kind in Europe. These iconic geodesic structures tower over the buildings of Sandown, forming an unrivalled multilevel space for the inhabitants to thrive in.
The Islands favourite sanctuary is a winner of VisitEnglands Best Small Attraction and ranked the top animal attraction on TripAdvisor with five full stars.
Monkey Haven specialises in primate care and is home to over 19 species, including the singing Lar gibbons and mighty Siamangs and Muellers gibbons, plus Mangabeys, Colobus monkeys, Javan langurs, critically endangered Cotton-top tamarins and many more.
Ryde
Paul McCartney recently confirmed what we all already knew the Beatles hit Ticket To Ride was inspired by a trip to Ryde made by Macca and John Lennon in the early sixties. This quirky fact is just one part of the story of the Isle of Wights largest town. Its a fantastic place that combines shopping centres, nights out, golden sands and creative hearts - making it a great holiday destination. The late Oscar-winning film director Anthony Minghella grew up in the town and journalist and author Philip Norman is also a Ryde boy.
Cowes
Cowes and East Cowes on the north coast is a historic town split by the River Medina. Internationally famed for its sailing events, it's home to the world's largest sailing regatta, attracting thousands of visitors from around the globe during Cowes Week. It is also home to the oldest carnival in the UK, Ryde Carnival.
But as well as being the number one destination for sailors throughout the summer, this bustling town is packed with boutique clothes stores, pavement cafés and bakeries selling freshly made produce. The towns also connected to Osborne House via a floating bridge, where you can explore the beautiful garden terraces and opulent state rooms that once formed Queen Victorias family home.

The capital of the Isle of Wight, Newport, lies at the heart of the island and is the main shopping centre and location

Yarmouth
The west coast of the Island is known as West Wight and includes the ancient port town of Yarmouth. One of the main gateways into the Island, Yarmouth features some of the oldest architecture on the Isle of Wight including a 16th-century castle and a grade 2 listed pier.
Sandown
Sheltered in a beautiful bay, Sandown is one of the best-loved beach destinations on the Isle of Wight. Its famed for its golden sandy beach and traditional pier, catering for families and holidaymakers of all ages. The towns home to an interactive dinosaur museum, as well as an animal sanctuary housed in an old fort.
